Peter Obi, has said Minister of Works David Umahi’s claims that he is inciting people of the South-East against the federal government are baseless distractions.

Obi said this in a series of posts on his X, on Thursday.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos on Wednesday, Umahi accused Obi of inciting people of the South-East against the Federal Government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.

The Federal Government had recently began the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road.

According to the government, the coastal highway will run through the Lagos shoreline of beach resorts in Lagos, while passing through eight other states.

Since the announcement of the commencement of the project, it has been generating controversy with many expressing worries over the businesses it would affect.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Obi described the project as a misplaced priority and should be discontinued.

But reacting to the criticism of Obi, Umahi said the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, supported the demolition of structures for road infrastructure while he was in office as governor.

In his response, Obi said his focus is on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity, rather than engaging in divisive politics, saying claims of incitement are baseless distractions.

“I have always advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary divisive politics.

“I refuse to be reduced to the level of those who wallow in ethnic politics. Worse still, I have never and can never descend so low as to base my political aspirations on any sectional or ethnic interest.”

The former Anambra governor said his commitment to serving with integrity remains steadfast, and encourage all Nigerians to unite for a prosperous future.

“I stand by my record as governor and reject any attempts to distort the narrative for political gain.

“My commitment remains unwavering: to advocate for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians, ensuring that development initiatives prioritize the needs of the people.”

He added that he will continue to insist that Nigeria’s resources be applied with maximum frugality.
