If there’s one thing Shroff believes in it’s that there are no shortcuts. If you don’t put in the work, you won’t be seen for your work. “Patience, hard work and consistency - make this your mantra,” says Shroff. “It’s all about showing up to work every day.”

Words to remember:

Label D’s signature drape saree was the brand’s claim to fame and continues to be a crowd favourite. “Don’t stop creating. Keep trying new things, research, learn, experiment, fail, build. You never know what’s your pièce de résistance,” explains Shroff.

Don’t be afraid to start small:

Starting a fashion business is considered to have a higher level of investment. The costs include materials, equipment, workspace, artisans, and more. It comes down to prioritising your expenses and scaling up slowly. According to Shroff, her brand began with only one person in her team and stayed that way for several years. It's possible to start with a modest budget and plan for both short-term and long-term financial sustainability.

Maximise your potential and seize opportunities:

In the age of social media, the platforms to grow have increased multifold and so has competition. Leverage it to showcase your work and connect with potential clients or collaborators. “With social media, there’s a lot of access to growth. However, don’t be fixated on fame. Pour your energy into serving your clients. Fame will follow” says Shroff.

Up-skill and stay ahead of the game:

Like in any craft, it is crucial to get your fundamentals right. Designers must understand pattern-making as well as sewing techniques. Designing on paper and executing those designs are two very different things. Master them.

So how does one keep the momentum going? “Well, my work is my dream,” explains Shroff. “I devote my time and energy to it. As artists, we’re alive. We must keep going and keep changing,” says Shroff.

Conclusion

For aspiring fashion designers, the path to success demands unwavering commitment, hard work, and a willingness to start small. The fashion industry is competitive, requiring constant innovation and a keen eye for detail. Leveraging social media can be instrumental in gaining visibility, but the focus should always be on serving clients and delivering exceptional work. Mastery of design fundamentals and a passion for the craft are essential for long-term success. Embracing change and staying adaptable are crucial in navigating the dynamic landscape of fashion.
